FISH Seeking Donations for Equipment Program

Prior to Hurricane Ian landfall, the Medical Equipment Lending program offered by FISH OF SANCAP assisted island residents or visitors with equipment they may only need on a temporary basis. For islanders recovering from a medical procedure or visitors unable to travel with bulky medical items such as walkers or wheelchairs, individuals were able to borrow equipment from FISH at no cost. Unfortunately, all medical equipment FISH had on hand was destroyed or lost as a result of Hurricane Ian.

FISH is asking for your help to replace lost equipment for this vital program. The agency can accept wheelchairs/transport wheelchairs; walkers; crutches (only in pairs); bedside commodes; bath chairs with or without handles; canes; knee scooters and shower transfer chairs.  All donated items must be in good working order — no rust, no missing pieces, no noticeable damage.

“As soon as we can replace what was lost, we hope to get this program up and running again,” says Erika Broyles, Senior Services Director.  “This was such a vital program, particularly for our older community members and visitors, and we are beginning to receive many requests as folks start to move back to their island homes.”

The Equipment Program is available to any islander who needs it. Equipment is generally picked up at the FISH site but may be delivered by volunteers with pre-arrangement. To learn more about the Equipment for Loan program or to inquire about donating, please contact Erika Broyles at FISH, 239-472-4775 or erika@fishofsancap.org.
