Helping Neighbors: Summer Scholarships at The Captiva Yacht Club
Each year, FISH provides summer youth scholarships to various summer camp opportunities on Sanibel and Captiva. New this year, the Captiva Island Yacht Club and its members donated several one-week scholarships to their youth summer sailing camp to help introduce our island youth to the great sport of sailing, beautiful waters and wildlife. Based on need and eligibility, these scholarships were offered to island families as determined by FISH.
“This was a unique opportunity for our island youth, as we have never offered this type of experience before,” states Jessi Zeigler, Assistant Program Director. “To see the smiles and surprise on the faces of the recipients, and to hear about their first-time experience as a sailor, was honestly priceless. One of recipients, a young girl who was as excited as she was apprehensive, offers her note of thanks on the camp experience, in her own words. . .”
Dear FISH and the boat club,
Thank you so much for giving me this scholarship. It was so great to learn how to sail. Sailing camp was just great. I learned so many things. My teacher was great. He was so nice to me. I have never been on a sailboat since that camp (sad face), and I would love to do this again. This is probably one of the things I love to do the most now. I had no idea what to do on the first day, and now I love sailing by myself. I did fall a lot, but that’s OK. It was so, so fun! (happy face). I would love to do it again.
FISH would like to thank The Captiva Island Yacht Club and its members for their partnerships in helping our island youth learn something new during their summer time off!
