Helping Neighbors: Volunteering is Fun!
Transportation services is just one of many FISH programs offered to islanders. On-island transport is available for necessary everyday living needs, such as banking or grocery shopping, as well as occasional trips to the barber or nail salon. Off-island transport is available for non-emergency medical or dental appointments. Both on and off island transportation services are performed by FISH volunteers, and can often be more satisfying than ‘just giving someone a ride’. Says volunteer Clair Beckmann, “I swear I got to drive two of the most fun people EVER! First, there’s the fellow who goes to Bailey's every week and then a lovely couple that were SO SO SO thankful for FISH. They were just delightful and so sweet; they gave me a tour of their yard, just the nicest, kindest, most loving couple EVER. It was truly a privilege to be able to take them to the doctor. Thanks for letting me volunteer -- these folks made my day!”
Clair is a former F.I.S.H. board member and has been involved with the organization for over five years. To schedule a ride, please call the FISH answering service at 239-472-0404. The caller will be connected to a FISH volunteer who will find someone available to meet the request. All rides must be requested at least three and preferably five days in advance. While FISH tries to accommodate all requests, there is no guarantee of transportation service
