Helping Neighbors: FISH Receives Excellence Award
Congratulations F.I.S.H. OF SANCAP on receiving the Joyce Jacobs Agency Excellence Award, in conjunction with the Harry Chapin Food Bank! F.I.S.H. was selected by submitting a narrative of our program’s information, 2016 accomplishments, description of resources [food, staff, volunteer base, funding] and examples of how our program has impacted the community. Included with the narrative were illustrations and stories of how FISH goes above and beyond to provide excellent customer service to program participants.
“We believe everyone who participates in our Food Pantry Program experiences a positive impact on their lives,” says Maggi Feiner, FISH President & CEO. “Some [clients] have moved beyond their crisis, and no longer need Food Pantry services. Others may not need as much, and visit less frequently. Some only visit during off season, when hours are cut or jobs lost. We can say, with quite certainty, that we are diminishing food insecurity in Lee County one mouth at a time.
Here’s how we know:
Food Pantry Client moves beyond her struggle and no longer needs the F.I.S.H. Food Pantry: “Thanks to the Food Pantry, I was able to feed myself after my mom’s passing. Thank you FISH.”
Food Pantry Client, on a fixed income, supplements her grocery needs by visiting the Pantry weekly: “They have everything I need. The staff is always so helpful. Let’s all thank F.I.S.H.”
Continues Feiner, “Food insecurity is a very frightening ordeal, particularly when there are children and elders involved. We know it’s not easy to ask for help. Many avoid asking at all costs, including their health and wellness. When our neighbors come to F.I.S.H., we are here to provide the assistance they need, when they need it. And we always treat everyone with compassion, respect and dignity.”
As noted by a F.I.S.H. Food Pantry Volunteer:
"In working more closely with FISH clients this winter as a Food Pantry volunteer, one thing has been underscored time after time, and that is how important the pantry is to the clients. It is small things--during Christmas week seeing a kid get excited to find a fabulously sugary cereal her mom would never buy. And it is large things--watching clients' relief at finding milk, fresh bread or fruit to bring to their families. . . . ‘As volunteers we are on the receiving end of heartfelt thanks from the clients. Weekly we hear how important the pantry is in sustaining the families, providing both food and relief from stress. Never doubt that the need is great, the impact is real and the mission is succeeding."
