Kiwanis Club Supports Island Youth Through 10K Race
The Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club returns as a Gold Sponsor of the popular 10K Race 4 F.I.S.H., the only foot race on Sanibel. The 11th annual 10K is set for Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way.
“The Kiwanis Club and Foundation are delighted to partner with F.I.S.H. in lending a helping hand to our island youth,” said Kiwanis President Aaron Pruss. “Club members have been dedicated to providing all youth with an array of educational opportunities for many years.”
Kiwanis uses its sizable charity budget to give local children educational opportunities through $150,000 in grants annually. The club administers scholarships from the tiniest of youth at the Children's Education Center of the Islands to post-secondary students. Scholarship funds are also provided for youth at Sanibel Sea School and The Sanibel School.
The club administers funding for an array of youth programs at island organizations, from The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum to the Sanibel Children's Library. Fourth and fifth grade students are able to experience a performance by the Southwest Florida Symphony thanks to the Kiwanis and its foundation.
“We, as a club, empower children of all ages to make an impact through service and leadership,” said Pruss. “Kiwanis supports our youngest of neighbors, so that we may build a better community.”
Neighbors helping neighbors is the foundation upon which F.I.S.H. has been built for the past three decades. Individuals served by the organization in 2018 increased by 46 percent, making it a record-breaking year. F.I.S.H. programs for children include the weekend food backpack designed to provide young ones with weekend food throughout the year, as well as educational and summer camp scholarships and tutoring.
“We are grateful for the generous support of Kiwanis Club members and its Foundation,” said 10K Race Committee Co-chair Diane Cortese. “They are good neighbors who care about our young people and the future of our community. We are pleased to have Kiwanis return as a gold sponsor of the 10K race.”
The Kiwanis Club, a group of more than 100 members, meets over a delicious breakfast on Tuesday mornings at The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club, 949 Sand Castle Rd.
