FISH OF SANCAP Smile Box program Welcomes New Participants

FISH OF SANCAP, the islands social service organization, welcomes new participants to its Smile Box program.

The FISH Smile Box program, which began at the onset of the COVID crisis, was inspired by the subscription box trend where participants receive boxes of products and goodies regularly. FISH quickly realized its positive impact on the community and incorporated the Smile Box program into a regular monthly offering.

The program, grew steadily since its inception but was placed on hold due to Hurricane Ian. FISH reinstated Smile Box delivery late 2023 and is pleased to welcome newcomers to the program. The baskets are designed to provide comfort and joy to island seniors.

FISH works closely with Community Housing & Resources (CHR), Sanibel and Captiva churches and others to stay informed of those who might need a Smile Box. “It truly is an honor to serve our seniors and the community,” says Erika Broyles, FISH Senior Services Director. “It brings me such joy to work with our older population. When I began working at FISH over 2 years ago, I could never have imagined all of the wonderful people I would meet and get to know. The conversations we have, stories I hear and heartfelt thanks from community members are truly a gift that fills my heart.”

Broyles notes that island seniors truly appreciate this program and those that help us fulfill it. The Smile Box program is available through assistance from supporters and volunteers of FISH.

Notes one senior in a card to FISH, “Erika and FISH, you are the best!  The Smile Box had so many great items, every one was just perfect — the Chapstick® for this cold weather, the real maple syrup for oatmeal on these cold mornings, the fun and delicious food items — everything ‘hit out of the park’.  I pray your day, week, year is filled with so many blessings that you can’t stop smiling and giving thanks.  You are a beautiful blessing to Sanibel.”

If you or someone you know would benefit from the Smile Box, please contact Erika Broyles, Senior Services Director, 239.472.4775 or erika@fishofsancap.org.
